Let's face it, kids today are harder to understand because they sometimes would not open up to adults. They seem to have their own little world and it seems as if adults are non-existent beings. There are parents that have given up in making their kid/s open up to them but they still wouldn't budge. So you think on what can you do to make your child do otherwise.

You can tell them that whatever secret they have is safe with you. Show them that you are a person that they can trust and that you are not their enemy. Assurance is the key in being able to let them open up to you. Also, just letting them know that you will not leave them is enough to comfort them.
